What Are Altar Servers?

Altar servers assist the presider with a number of small but significant tasks during Mass. These may include holding and carrying the special books used during Mass, lighting candles, carrying the crucifix and processional candles, assisting the deacon in preparing the altar, and helping with other tasks that allow other ministers to carry out their roles.

During very special celebrations such as Holy Thursday, the Easter Vigil, Easter Sunday, and other holy days, servers may also assist with the thurible and incense boat and with the sprinkling of holy water.

Altar Server Formation and Training Classes

Adult Altar Servers

The adult altar server liturgical ministry of All Saints Catholic Community is designed to serve God first and assist our priests on the third Sunday of every month at the 11:00 AM Mass. Five servers are assigned to serve this Mass.

Requirements to become an altar server:

  • An exemplary Catholic with a deep and obvious love of the Blessed Sacrament
  • A registered member of the parish, known in the community as someone committed to the Church and to an understanding of the Real Presence of the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ.
  • Have received all the sacraments of Initiation — Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist. If married, the marriage must be valid in the Roman Catholic Church.
  • Safe Environment cleared, committed to being prepared, and willing to serve for a minimum of two years.

Servers find spiritual fulfillment, as well as a strong sense of community belonging, knowing that they are serving God.

Adult training and enrollment

Adult altar servers are trained separately from our youth and can be trained at any time.  For more information, contact:

Child Altar Servers

Any child who is at least 10 years old is welcome to attend Altar Server Formation Training Classes, but it is up to the parent(s) to decide if their child is ready to become an altar server. The program coordinator will also decide whether the child is ready to serve at the Altar of the Lord.

During very special celebrations such as Holy Thursday, the Easter Vigil, Easter Sunday, and other holy days, the servers assist with the handling of the thurible and incense boat, and assist with the sprinkling of holy water.

Children: Why do you want to be Altar Servers?

In making this commitment, you are expected to be on time and appropriately dressed and prepared each time you are scheduled or have agreed to serve as a substitute. You should be attentive and prepared to participate in the liturgy with the reverence and competence expected of the important office of altar server. You are expected to study the liturgy and to grow in your understanding of the mysteries at which you assist, so that you will know the glory of God through your service.

Parents: Why do you want your children to be part of the Altar Server program?

Give a great deal of thought to why you want your child to be a part of this program. Will you support your child’s desire to be an altar server and help your child meet that commitment in a manner appropriate to your child’s age and development?

There are five Masses held every weekend here at All Saints. Currently, three altar servers are assigned to each of these Masses. Parents, please understand that children may not be assigned exclusively to one particular Mass. Servers are expected to serve at all their assigned Masses, even those at the less popular times, and at times that are not convenient for your schedule or your child’s schedule, such as the 7:30 AM Mass. It is not just your child that will make the commitment to serve at the Altar of the Lord; you will as well.
